European Parliament resolution on the case of the arbitrary detention of President Mohamed Bazoum by the junta in Niger

The European Parliament,

Strongly condemns the military coup of 26 July 2023 and the continued arbitrary detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and members of his family by the junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani;

Calls for the immediate and unconditional release of President Bazoum and all individuals arbitrarily detained following the coup;

Reaffirms its recognition of Mohamed Bazoum as the democratically elected President of Niger, whose detention constitutes a grave violation of democratic principles and the rule of law;

Condemns the repression of political actors, journalists and civil society, and calls on the military authorities to immediately restore fundamental freedoms;

Calls for the swift restoration of constitutional order and democratic governance through a credible, civilian-led transition process leading to free, transparent and inclusive elections;

Calls on the European Union and its Member States to intensify diplomatic pressure on the military authorities, including through the effective implementation of the EU framework for restrictive measures adopted in response to the situation in Niger; condemns hostile statements from senior officers, including a recent call to prepare a war, against France;

Calls for close coordination with regional and international partners, including the United Nations and regional organisations, to support democratic restoration and stability in Niger;

Expresses deep concern about the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the Sahel, and stresses that democratic legitimacy and accountable governance are essential to addressing insecurity and protecting civilians;

Reaffirms the importance of international justice and accountability mechanisms, and expresses concern over initiatives that weaken international efforts to combat impunity;

Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the VP/HR, the authorities of Niger, the UN and relevant regional organisations.
