Calls on the Commission and the Member States to take urgent measures to prevent and sanction social media interference in the democratic and electoral process, paying particular attention to the profiling of individuals for the purpose of political targeting, to the use of algorithms that amplify divisive content during election campaigns and to the use of recommender systems that limit the diversity of political information that reaches voters; calls for the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising Regulation to be rigorously and promptly enforced, including requirements for independent audits of platforms’ algorithms during election periods; calls, further, for a ban on political microtargeting based on sensitive personal data and for every member of the public to be guaranteed access to pluralistic political information that has not been filtered in an opaque manner by platforms’ algorithms; |
